Who Are The High Doomben Cup Winners?
Over the years, many horses have taken the Doomben Cup. However, there are only 5 who have done it in a way that is worthy of remembering time and time again. Here are the high 5 Doomben Cup Winners of all time;
1. Might and Power
Might and power should be a name you’re familiar with if you’ve been watching or betting on horse races in Australia for a while. Between 1997 and 98, Might and Power was a force to be reckoned with. To give you an idea of how well Might and Power did during these seasons, in 97, the racer took the Caulfield Cup by 7.5 margins. Later, Might and Power performed well at the Melbourne Cup, holding off the challenge from Doriemus. In 1998, Might and Power took the Tancred Stakes by five lengths, won the Queen Elizabeth stakes by 10 lengths, and took the Doomben Cup later that season. To end things off, Might and Power also won the 1998, demonstrating his might and power as he dominated the other horses over these seasons.
2. Rough Habit
Rough Habit was on the scene between 1991 and 1995 in Australia. Known as one of the finest horses from New Zealand, Rough Habit featured in some great races, winning 29 of them during his time in competition, 11 being group 1 races. During his five years of racing, Rough Rabit dominated the racing scene in Queensland! Having won the Doomben Cup 3 times and the Stradbroke Handicap twice, we think it’s safe to say he made a habit out of it! In 1992, Rough Habit also won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Winning the Doomben three times in a row definitely secured Rough Habit a spot here.
3. Defier
Often considered one of the ideal middle-distance gallopers of his time, Defier, trained by Guy Walters, managed to secure three Group 1 races, claiming the Doomben Cup in 2004, the George Main Stakes in 2002, and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2002 as well. Amongst these wins, the Defier also often competed with the likes of Lonhro, Northerly, and Fields of Omagh on a regular basis. He even became the runner-up in the Cox Plates in 2002 and 2003.
4. Scenic Shot
Back to a horse who won the Doomben multiple times, Scenic Shot. Having won the Doomben Cup in both 2009 and 2011, Daniel Morton trained Scenic Shot and was seen as one of the ideal gallopers in the three to four-year-old category in Western Australia. Notably, the sun of Scenic also faired pretty well in racers, coming runner-up in 2007 in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.
5. Streama
Another Guy Walters-trained galloper, the last of the high gallopers in fact, Streama performed well at the 2014 Doomben Cup, taking out the likes of Leebaz and Junoob in that race. However, before the 2014 season, Streama performed even better, with some of her ideal results at the Stradbroke and Tatts Tiara in 2013. Some of her ideal wins included the Australian Oaks (where she was a $1.45 favour ite), the Flight Stakes, and the George Main Stakes, and she also won the trot in 2009 and the Doomben Cup. Clearly, winning is in the genes.
